Vignette Ideas to Transform Your Home One Corner At A Time
How to create artfully styled arrangements throughout your home
When I was decorating my home, I had an epiphany that changed everything – I started thinking in terms of vignettes. When you study well-designed rooms, you find they’re made up of visual compositions with several elements that catch your eye and elevate the space — a styled corner of a room, an arrangement at the end of a hallway. These moments can sometimes be the most memorable in a room (and are the most fun to create).
Vignettes are the solution to empty and forgotten walls and purely functional spaces that are lacking personality — in any room of the house. Not only do they add design interest that makes a space look more finished, they also lend it character that makes it feel homey and warm.
I also discovered focusing on vignettes helps to simplify the design process. I think of vignettes almost like building blocks of a room. While you want to take the whole room into consideration, you can chunk it down into one vignette at a time. This approach is less overwhelming, not to mention more satisfying, producing results along the way (as opposed to waiting for one grand ‘after’ reveal). In this sense, vignettes are conducive to slow decorating and being intentional about design over time.
I think the best way to wrap your head around vignettes is to see different examples. That’s how I learned and trained my eye. So, I will share vignette ideas that have inspired me in my design journey and break down the components into ‘formulas’ you can easily follow to create your own vignettes.
Enjoy!
In case you missed it…
I’m thrilled you found your way to Singular, whether you’re new here or have been along for the ride. I hope you enjoy today’s free post. As a reminder, paid subscriptions support the love and care that go into creating this unique space. Another way to support is to like/comment, restack, or share with a friend.
Tabletop with Objects, Art, Something Lower
This composition is perhaps the most classic and foolproof. A piece of furniture with a tabletop anchors the arrangement. On top is a pleasing and practical set of objects: a lamp, books (stacked or arranged sideways), a plant or vase, a decorative bowl or object. A piece of art roughly proportional to the table draws the eye upward. Oftentimes there’s a bonus element in the lower section, whether that’s a storage/waste basket or a side chair.
For maximum impact you can frame the vignette in a doorway.
This example serves as a reminder that a round table can be pushed against the wall as part of a vignette.
As illustrated above, settling on a color palette can help to unite the objects in the composition.
A Floating Table Moment
Placing a table, typically rounded but could be square, in the center of a space can create a strong focal point. Given the shape, this arrangement typically looks best with an object in the center, like a large floral arrangement, plant or a statue. Stacks of coffee table books look particularly good around the perimeter (or keep it bare for a minimal look).
In an entry hallway, this table can be used for keys, wallet, etc.
A skirted table is a lovely option to bring in some pattern and softness. Also, pendant lighting can be aligned with the center of the table to add to the vignette.
A Seating Arrangement
You can make an interesting vignette with various kinds of seating; often with art above. This composition works particularly well in small spaces like at the end of a hallway or stairwell. There are so many different ways to approach it as shown in the examples below.
In a wider space a single chair can look more complete accompanied by a drinks table.
A bench provides a visual anchor at the end of a hallway.
A bench (or a chest) displaying books and art is another clever way to create a vignette against a blank wall.
A single accent chair can be tucked anywhere to create a vignette — with art above and books/flowers displayed on top.
Or for a cleaner look, leave the top of the chair empty. A wall sconce can stand in for art too.
Just Add a Pedestal
An instant way to decorate a blank space is with a pedestal or plinth. Tuck them in a corner or against an empty wall and decorate with a vessel or piece of art.
In limited spaces like a stair landing, a pedestal adds visual interest without taking up too much room.
A pedestal works well instead of a table to fill a space and draw the eye upward.
These are just a sampling of compositions, but really there are endless possibilities. What I love most about vignettes is how customizable they are to any space and to one’s personal preferences. I hope these vignette ideas got your imagination going and helped you visualize how you can style your own vignettes.
This Week’s Highlights:
My trip to the Saturday Antique Market in Estremoz, Portugal proved once again to me that there’s no better treasure hunting than a European market. I love how each one is so specialized to the region — here it was a lot of glassware from wine production; local traditional ceramics; a huge variety of baskets; and embroidered linens. And the prices were SO GOOD! I wish I had organized a trunk to take home bigger pieces. Next time!
I was super impressed by the food in Portugal — rustic hearty dishes with so much soul and often using seasonal ingredients. As we transition to fall, I look forward to testing out some dishes at home with this cookbook celebrating the regional cooking of Portugal.
Now we’re back in England. For our last week, the focus is on garden tours (provided the weather cooperates!). I always pick up little gardening tricks — like laying sheep’s wool on dahlia beds to prevent pests and lock in moisture. And I get loads of inspiration — from ideas for wall plantings to positioning cement pedestals with urns in wooded areas. There’s so much to share; perhaps that needs to be its own Substack.
My husband and I are sneaking off for our first night without our son. We’re staying at Coombeshead Farm, which in addition to being a working farm, has an on-site bakery and phenomenal restaurant. I will report back!
By this time next week I’ll be back home in Brooklyn and back to regularly scheduled programming. To be honest, I’m looking forward to romanticizing the last days of summer on my home turf.
Hope you’re having a lovely week. Thank you so much for being here.

My love for vignettes knows no bounds so I deeply resonate with this. Your design POV here is very similar to my event philosophy too. Love these tips!
Such great inspiration! Since my home is pretty minimal, I'm always thinking of little moments I can create here and there, and these tips certainly help with decorating an entire room.
